Most of the computers using classic operating systems such as Windows 95 and 98 can be easily made considerably faster by 20 to 100% in a very short time. The below mentioned tips and tricks can give a fair idea of how to get this done more effectively enabling you in saving a considerable amount of time. Most of these things can be performed by you only but in case you feel uncomfortable, you should always seek computer help from an expert
tech support provider.
Ways to enhance the network server:
If you have more than 24MB RAM in your computer, you can optimize it to function as a network server. For this, click on Start->Settings->Control Panel and then open the System icon, select Performance tab. Here you will find a heading named Advanced Setting and under this, select File System then open the hard disc tab, choose Network Server. It will change the profile of your computer to the network server which buffers the data in its memory aggressively enabling fast disk operations while optimizing its file system.
Ways to enhance Input Output (I/O) Transfers:
You can make your computer use its DMA (direct memory access) with the IDE (integrated device electronics) CD ROM and the disc drives in order to lower the usage of the CPU while performing I/O transfer. Before doing that you need to know if your computers drive supports the DMA and to do this open control panel->system properties. Then select the tab named device Manager. Under this click on the +sign located near Disk Drives. Choose the drive for enabling DMA and select on Properties. If you find a checkbox against DMA, check it to enable. In case there is no checkbox or the same is disabled, the motherboard of your computer does not support this feature.
Ways to change BIOS settings for best performance:
Disable the BIOS setting used for conserving power as this setting reduces the speed of your CPU. This setting is beneficial for the Laptops/Notebooks to increase the battery life.
Ways to Optimize the RAM cache:
If your computer is very slow and you dont know why, you can check the BIOS settings to ensure that your memory cache is not disabled.
Ways to reclaim the computers memory:
If you can prevent some unwanted programs from starting up, you can enable more RAM availability for your favorite programs. For this, open win.ini in Notepad and put a semicolon at the beginning of lines which begin a Load= and Run= and then save the file before restarting the computer. It enables in loading only those parts of software which are commonly used by you and ultimately boost he speed of your computer.
Ways to increase the Video Graphics:
Always use lowest screen resolution & the color. It could be 800x600 and 16 bit. Switching from a 32 bit to 16 bit improves your game speed by at least 20%. Upgrade the graphic card driver in 6 months. Lower VCACHE settings force the OS to flush the cache and reuse the same and to fine tune the VCACHE memory you need to first backup the system.ini file then select run under start menu. Here, type notepad\windows\system.ini. Edit the file by entering the following lines under the VCACHE section and save the file:
Minfilecache=8192 (not more than 10% of total RAM)
Maxfilecache=8192 (not more than 25% of total RAM)
Below Maxfilecache, add the following:
Chunksize=512 (you can also type 1024 or 2048 depending on the RAM size)
Namecache=2048
Directorycache=48
Ways to improve virtual memory:
You can prevent the trashing of the hard disc while optimizing its usage by virtual memory size setting and to do this, right click my computer, then choose properties->performance->virtual memory. Check the box let me specify my own virtual memory settings. Set the max and min virtual memory size to 2.5 - 3 times of the total RAM and click on ok.
