Step by Step Guide to Ordering Wines

Are you too nervous to browse the wine list at a restaurant or in a wine store, electing to order their house wine or the first thing that you see in the store? Choosing a wine can be a daunting task for most consumers, especially when the store or restaurant has hundreds to choose from. Here is a step by step guide to selecting the best wine for your tastes.

Red or White?
To begin, there are thousands of different varieties, but to narrow down your search, start by choosing a red or a white wine. Most inexperienced wine drinkers tend to favor white wines and over time, they develop a taste for deeper reds as their palette and experience with wines deepens and refines over time. Everybody has to start somewhere – remember that when you feel overwhelmed – do not hesitate to ask for recommendations (do expect however that they will be offering you the higher-end, more pricier items first!).

To help you select your wine, consider whether you are eating food along with your wine or whether you will be enjoying it on its own. While you can choose either wine to pair with your food choices, after all it is the most important to choose something that you will like, there are some common food associations that go with both red and white wines. White wines are typically served with fish, shellfish, poultry and some white meats such as pork. Red wines are more traditionally served with red meats such as beef and lamb.

Choose your Price Point
Once you have selected your preference for either white or red wine, consider the price that you are willing to pay for the bottle. Keep in mind that when you are in a restaurant, the prices are marked up substantially more than if you were to purchase the same wine from a retailer. If you are selecting a wine type that you have never tried before, such as Chardonnay, Red Zinfandel or a Shiraz, start with a low to mid-priced point bottle. This choice will allow you to decide whether you enjoy this type of grape and process, before you spend a great deal of money for a single bottle.

Ask for Help
Next, it is always best to ask for help from a professional who has made wine during their life-time or who is knowledgeable and confident in their expertise; either the wine sommelier or owner of the wine shop will be able help point you to bottles that are within your price range and to your specific taste. Don’t be shy about your specific tastes and price point, as there is sure to be the right fit for you within their offerings. They will also often permit you to try a taste of an open bottle if one is available.

Choosing a wine does not have to be intimidating and after a while, it can be exciting to try new things. Keep a list of the things that you like so that you can return to those choices in the future. Dessert wines and champagne are categories all on their own and there are many to choose from, priced by the glass or bottle.
