Stellar Ideas For Your Winter Vacation

By:

Winter may seem a world away at the moment, especially if you are struggling through the remnant of summer heat. However, in order to get the best prices and fares on winter travel, you've got to make a move pretty soon.

But if you're not much of a skier or snowboarder, you might not think that a getaway during the snowy season is right for you or your family. Allow me to be the one to disabuse you of this erroneous notion.

First off, you should remember that wintertime is the "off-season" for many favorite vacation spots, particularly in the tropics. Areas like Florida, Hawai'i, and the Bahamas will have far fewer tourists than they would during the summer months, so if you love the beach, but hate the crowds, then an escape between the months of November and February may be exactly what you're looking for.

I'm not much of a beach-goer myself; instead, I prefer the rustic lodges so often rented out in the mountainous regions of the west. Choosing a suite, cabin, or condo to rent with family or friends will provide you everything you need to fix hot cocoa and home-cooked meal.

Selecting a space that also provides a fireplace with the accommodations can help you create the perfect cozy atmosphere--or a romantic one if you are enjoying your vacation exclusively with your spouse.

With young children along, having a blast in the snow isn't difficult. There are snowball fights, ice skating, sledding, and building snowmen to occupy the whole family. But with an older set, you might wonder what activities will keep everyone engaged.

Many hospitality establishments will have their own website, which may make recommendations. For example, one of my favorite lodges partners with a nearby adventure company to offer discounts on snowmobiling. Even if you don't find any suggestions on the website, you can always call the front desk to ask for ideas.

In any case, getting outdoors always makes that cup of cocoa that much more deserved at the end of the day. Find out if there are any stables nearby still offering horseback riding despite the blanket of snow; if not, you should investigate Breckenridge sleigh rides, which are frequently accompanied by entertainment appropriate for the whole family.

You can also use snowy conditions to teach children about emergency preparedness and survival skills. It is useful to know how to start a fire in less-than-desirable conditions or build a shelter in the snow, so make it a team effort in trying to both teach and acquire these skills. Then, when you troop back to your accommodations, you will be more grateful for them than ever.
