Steer Clear Of These 4 Critical Mistakes When Building Rabbit Hutches

By:

Outdoor rabbits hutches are usually low-priced and undemanding to build. It is possible to manufacture one in less than a day and your work can often save you a lot of money over buying one. Moreover, you will be able to manufacture it to your dimensions. A large number of rabbit cages that are for sale are somewhat small, but by constructing one yourself you can offer extra room to your rabbits that they will greatly benefit from.

Before starting the actual construction on your new rabbit hutch there are quite a few vital issues that should be considered. A few of these items might seem too evident to mention, but a large number of rookies will be clueless when it comes to manufacturing a rabbit hutch.

Mistake #1: Building With Inappropriate Materials

Outdoor Rabbits hutches are typically constructed from a combination of lumber, metal, and wire mesh. Typically, three sides and the top (roof) are constructed using wood while the fourth wall and the floor are constructed with wire. Using metal for the sides is ideal due to the fact that it will not rot and will be much easier to keep clean. When rabbits urinate, it can saturate the lumber, creating an unpleasant odor that won't occur with metal cages.

It is critical not to employ cheaper particle board to save some money because it will rot and warp in damp conditions. High quality exterior plywood is the correct material to use for the sides and roof, and treating the wood will make it last longer. In spite of this, do not paint or treat wood that the rabbit can nibble on because it can harm them.

A wood floor is unquestionably not satisfactory. The floor must be made with wire that will let droppings plunge to the ground. If rabbit droppings are not permitted to fall through the flooring they will build up in the hutch and be the cause of filth and sickly rabbits.

Mistake #2: Not Supplying an Adequate Amount of Floor Space

Bunny rabbits will ideally be offered an opportunity to work out or exercise for about 4 hours each day. Bunny rabbits that get plenty of daily exercise are healthier, have increased life spans and are more productive when kept for meat. For this reason they should be given a bit of extra room in their hutch. Providing extra room to bound around in will be greatly cherished.

A simple way to furnish them with additional room and more opportunities to get their necessary exercise is to make their home 2 levels high. The two levels can be accessed by means of a wire ramp that permits the rabbit to scurry to either floor as needed. This will boost the size of their living area while not requiring any more land area in the yard.

Mistake #3: Not Constructing Enough Solid Walls

Bunny rabbits need to have sunlight and clean air, but too much direct sun or wet weather can lead to a premature death. Rabbits hutches having only 1 solid side will subject your animal to possibly detrimental weather conditions. Powerful winds, rainfall, and snow can be kept out of the cage and away from the bunnies if you build 3 solid sides and a solid top (roof).

Moreover, rabbits cannot bear hot weather and need to be given a shaded place where they can avoid the harsh sunlight. By positioning the hutch well and manufacturing it with an adequate number of protective sides, the rabbit can remain reasonably unaffected by the weather conditions.

Mistake #4: Not Erecting It on Legs

All outside rabbits hutches should be built on top of 4 legs. Setting a hutch directly on the dirt will permit wet and sullied conditions to happen in the hutch which will cause health problems. Plus, without support legs the bunny droppings won't be able to fall through the wire floor, which will cause an interior buildup.
