Day 3: The technical session at the beginning of the day saw panelists deliberate on a number of issues such as global metallurgical coal markets and the importance of India, the global iron ore market, new pricing paradigms, Chinese and Indian steel growth etc.

Speakers included Mr K Ranganath, CMD, KIOCL Ltd, Mr Calum Baker, CRU, UK, Ms Annalisa Jeffries, Metal Analyst, Platts and Mr P K Mukherjee, Managing Director, Sesa Goa. In his speech on Indian iron ore industry, Mr Mukherjee deliberated on how the prospects were bright and how the industry would stand to gain further if government policies were more supportive.

Following the technical session, delegates were introduced to a different kind of interaction at the Gujarat NRE integrity theme presentation contest. Contestants spoke on Ethics in business: Ethics or ethical law, what comes first. It was pointed out how a corruption free society could actually transcend into a terror free society and that ethics gives control internally while ethical laws gives external support. Speedy justice and a global code of ethics was also advocated.

The last session of the conference was on partner state Team Orissa. The deliberations were among the best of the three-day conference. It was advantage Orissa all the way. Global Steel 2010 is a meeting point where the east coast meets the west coast. We have a lot of potential in mines, metals as well as in areas such as energy, power and petrochemicals. We want to highlight our areas of efficiency that will bring us nearer to prospective investors. We welcome one and all to open shop in Orissa, said Mr B N Palai, GM, IPICOL and Group Head - outreach & promotion, Team Orissa.

The introductory address by Mr Suresh Chandra Patnaik, IAS, CMD, IPICOL, went on to highlight the plus points that make Orissa one of the best for opening industry and beginning businesses.

Mr Lalit Beriwala, Director, Shyam Steel Industries Ltd, went on to share his experiences of working in Orissa. We have spared no efforts in installing the latest technologies from around the world in setting up an integrated steel plant at Durgapur. We also have an integrated steel plant at Barbil, Orissa and three speciality rolling mills in West Bengal. The companys future plans include a 2 MT pelletisation plant in Orissa, a 1.1 MT ISP in Purulia, West Bengal and a 0.6 MT, ISP, at Kharagpur.

Exports of products such as TMT re-bars, channels, angles and billets are on regular basis to Japan, Ghana, the UAE, Indonesia, Nepal, Bhutan and Gabon among other countries, said Mr Puspendu Chaakrabarty, vice-president, Shyam Steel.

Beginning his presentation, Mr Hemant Sharma, IAS, Director of Industries, Government of Orissa, said it is opportunites galore in Orissa. Perceptions, attitudes have changed. Industrialization is catching on fast. We are a landmine of mineral resources and have plenty of chromite, nickel, bauxite, iron ore and coal. Rightfully, it is one of the hot destinations that investors can look at, said Mr Sharma.

Today, Orissa attracts investments more than $120 billion. The World Bank, in its report in 2009, has ranked Bhubaneswar as the third, from among 17 cities, which has an ease in doing business.

The strengths include a solid resource base, raw material presence and existing industries. Infrastructure is good and power is not only cheap but available in plenty. A new wave of industrialization has caught on and the state has seen 79 MoUs signed. Steel gets maximum investment sectorwise. Therefore, we can say our strength is steel, added Mr Sharma.

Mr Nand Kishore Taori, MD, Amtek Metal and Mining Limited, went on to share his experiences of doing business in Orissa and the prospects it holds.

The vote of thanks was given by Mr Amitava Bhattacharya of The Economic Times. Thanking delegates, panelists, sponsors and those associated with the event, Bhattacharya said it was indeed a pleasure to be part of Global Steel 2010.He mentioned about the prospects that Orissa holds and wished everyone a great future ahead. The session was brought to an end by session chairman Dr Bristow.
