Stay Safe On The Roads

By:

The importance of road safety is drummed into each of us from the moment we start learning to drive, and indeed is a major part of the driving theory test that everyone has to pass before they can legally obtain their licence. Although there are mercifully few new motorists who set out with a cavalier attitude to road safety, it can be surprisingly easy for complacency to creep in after a while. You might not realise it, but the more experience you gain, the more likely you are to think youve got the hang of things and theres nothing motoring can throw at you that you havent already encountered. This, however, is a pretty dangerous perception and has been many a motorists downfall over the years.

With millions of people taking to the roads of Britain each and every day, it goes without saying that there are bound to be more than a few bad apples in amongst the vast majority of considerate, cautious motorists. But, of course, you dont have to be knowingly reckless in order to cause an accident. A simple momentary lapse of concentration for example, a sudden lane change performed without the appropriate observations can have serious consequences. No matter how courteous and observant you are, its often impossible to legislate for the actions of other drivers. Nevertheless, there are steps you can take to minimise the risk of being involved in an accident.

Many drivers like to play down the importance of sticking to the speed limit to justify their own flouting of the law, but its essential to remember that excessive speed can and does kill. In fact, even those who stay within the speed limit may find themselves involved in a serious accident depending on the conditions it is, after all, easy to lose control of a vehicle even at relatively low speeds whilst driving on tricky roads in wet weather. The trick is not to treat the designated speed limit as a target, but more as a guide. Youll have to use your own judgment to an extent, but be sure to allow greater braking distances when the roads are slick and wet.

In addition, you can also reduce the risk of personal injury by ensuring you wear a seatbelt at all times whilst out and about on the roads. It is of course mandatory for both drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts and its the drivers duty to make sure their passengers are doing so. A seatbelt could be the difference between serious and minor injury in the event of an accident, so be sure not to overlook the importance of wearing yours.
