Stay Relevant In Today's Job Market

By:

As the employment market becomes more and more uncertain, it has become necessary that the already employed people devise ways and strategies to remain relevant in the employment market. What we are witnessing currently is that the younger generation (the generation X) are fast pushing put the older generation; and those of the older generation who lack the skills in contemporary matters such as Information and Communications Technology are fast being laid off. In the light of these changes, it became imperative for the means of sticking to employment be devised.

Study more: This is easy step to take and many people have used this method successfully, that is going back to school to upgrade their skills so that you as the employee remain more relevant in the workplace. In the recent past, the age bar that had been socially set to stop studying is no longer existent, end now even the older people are going back to school for skill re tooling. This is unlike the past where someone studied up to their university or college degree and later settled down for permanent employment. With the high competition in the labor market, it is more now than ever necessary to build on your current skill set as well as create new skill sets.

Sharpening your market skills: Where an employee chooses to work on his market skills. Market skills can be defined as internships, mentorships. These are opportunities to transition into an industry outside your current skill set and gain relevant real world experience. This is a sure way of remaining street smart, and employers even prefer those employees with sharper market skills rather than those with many academic papers to their name. It is important to note that these market skills are not obtained from schools, rather they are acquired when a person is exposed to the market conditions.

Work on the social skills: As flimsy as this may sound, social skills play the greatest role in keeping people employed. The same skills will enable one to get a job very fast, through networking with the contacts of friends and business associates. In the near future, the employment market may be inclined to employ those people with commendable social skills, because the workplace is fast becoming a place where people tend to spend their entire lives. These skills are also instrumental in solving organizational, personal and group conflicts.
