Starflower Oil's High Gla Content Has Many Benefits

By:

Starflower oil, also known as borage oil, has a couple key benefits that other oils don't have. For one thing, starflower oil has the highest concentration of GLA, or Gamma Linolenic Acid, on the planet. That might not mean anything to you right now, but it will by the end of this article. Because of its high content of GLA, starflower oil is very regularly added to Omega essential fatty acid supplements, though it's generally listed as borage oil. Borage oil contains some of the most beneficial Omega 6 oils on the planet. Why is that?

The reason for this revolves around why the body needs Omega fatty acids to begin with. Whether they're Omega 3s, 6s, or 9s, all Omega essential fatty acids have important and specific functions within the body. When Omega fatty acids are ingested by the body and processed, the body then converts them to more complex compounds, sometimes through many steps in order to get them to compounds that are known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are called hormone-like compounds, and as such, they assist in the regulation of many of the various functions of the body. Normally, diets are full of linoleic acid, which is also an Omega 6, which then must be converted to GLA. The body can many times experience some problems with this part of the conversion, and can develop a deficiency in GLA even when there is an adequate supply of the precursor compound linoleic acid in their diet.

This is why starflower oil benefits the body so greatly. By eating GLA directly, the body is able to skip the initial conversion process that's required to create gamma linolenic acid from linoleic acid, and instead can use its GLA to convert into prostaglandins. Many studies and trials have been done to determine GLA's role in skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. It seems to be that when someone is suffering from those kinds of skin conditions that there is a correlative lack in GLA in their body as well. A specific enzyme exists that the body needs in order to convert linoleic acid into GLA, and in some persons, this enzyme can either be deficient or not perfection functional and can cause the body to be lacking in GLA. So when a person suffering from certain skin conditions ingests GLA, they've shown improvements in many cases.

In general, Omega essential fatty acids seem to show positive skin benefits when supplemented. People who have been suffering from skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and others have shown improvements as a result of taking Omega essential fatty acid supplements. The main factor seems to be the prostaglandins that the body forms from its supply of Omega essential fatty acids. These prostaglandins are very useful and help the body to regulate healthy skin function, but are also very complex and can easily be deficient in the body. Not only that, but Omega fatty acids make up the cell membrane of each cell in your body, and it is believed that deficiencies in key Omega fatty acids can actually cause poor cellular uptake of nutrients, which has symptoms of skin disease and dryness. If you are one who doesn't really know whether or not they have a good supply of Omega fatty acids in their diet, then you ought to do some more research and take a closer look into starflower oil and other oils that are high in Omega fatty acids. There are a lot of different ways that a person can get more Omega essential fatty acids into their diet. But for its content of GLA, starflower oil is unmatched and has many other great benefits as well.
