I will attempt to explain why the size of wardrobes has changed in Japan over the last century or so. Japan used to have small wardrobes as their normal size, but now in modern day Japan, this normal size is similar to the rest of the world. By contrast the European standard which was much bigger and also had more decoration on has become smaller as standard. The North American seems to have changed mainly with the type of wood used.

The change in sizes of the furniture that the Japanese people use,indeed reflects the change in a nation. This is not unusual, but a little surprising when one realizes that the Japanese nation is very traditional. especially when it comes to life style. So lets look at what brought about these changes.

I have always been interested in different life styles, especially oriental, they are very different in approach and value to the life style of western people. I traveled and lived in Japan to study their life style. There are clearly two different contrasts in today's Japan. Firstly Tokyo which is a very modern city, but even here traditions have been kept within a modern look and feel. The country side is far more old Japan , but why was there a change?

The Japanese have always been smaller height wise than European, or American people. The reason for this can been seen in their diet. The Japanese diet has consisted of white rice as the staple food, this tended to be eaten for all meals, even breakfast, when they would eat a white gruel. Rice was and is grown in abundance in Japan, and this would be eaten with vegetables, and fish freshly caught, in the seas around the islands.

After the second world war, there came a large change for the Japanese people. The Americans occupied Japan and with it some of the American ways of life merged into the Japanese life style. The largest change was diet, the Americans took with them not only new clothes style, but the famous hamburger. The young Japanese like the burger, and ate them. Over the years this certainly resulted in the Japanese people of that generation, growing in size. And this is why the small pine wardrobes that was the normal are now too small. The wardrobes that they use in Japan now are copies of the pine wardrobes seen in most homes in the western world.
