Sports artists paintings can have many different styles. Most sports art is abstract. Basically an interpretation from an artists point of view. One of the most famous artists who created paintings of sports was Norman Rockwell. Although some paintings of sports are based directly off of a specific event or athlete, Rockwell chose to paint fictional characters and events.

Sports art has changed drastically over the years, with technology playing a major role in how it has evolved. When Rockwell was creating his artwork, he didn’t have the ability to watch every basketball, football, hockey or baseball game, thus limiting his exposure to what he based his paintings off of. He didn’t have Sports Center, ESPN or Yahoo! Sports to watch highlight clips or DirectTV to get the Sunday football package.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not taking anything away from today’s artists. If anything, it’s allowed the paintings and other artwork to evolve to a level that we’ve never seen or experienced before.

A perfect example of this change can be seen in the sports art of Adam Port. Port creates paintings of sports - basketball, football, hockey and baseball paintings, amongst others, that are so realistic that they tend to even fool the human eye. He calls his sports paintings “realistic” and they certainly are.

His recent work includes baseball paintings taken from the pictures of famous photographer, Charles Conlon. The paintings were showcased at The Conlon Event, which was so spectacular, that it earned him a spot on This Week in Baseball on Fox Sports. Although the paintings were similar in style to Rockwell’s, they had the commonality of the sport of baseball, the differences were astounding, and in a good way. I’m certain that if Rockwell were alive today, he’d be a huge fan of Port’s work and the two of them would get along just fine.

Sports art is Port’s forte, but he does celebrity paintings as well. His resume, or gallery, I should say, includes the likes of rapper/actor Ludacris, Elvis Presley and many others. The portrait paintings will knock your socks off and should be seen by everyone, even if you’re not a fan of his subject matter.
