Desk flags are the latest fad on the horizon in the modern world, based on the belief that they bring one's country closer to the heart. Now, the creation of flags is not a recent concept by any means; they have existed for more than 4,000 years. But, they have always seemed so huge in size. Now, they have become portable.

A Flag Conveys a Lot

The flags of ancient times were only meant to distinguish one province or state from another; they were a means of identification. Even King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table decorated their horses with flags, and carried flags on their armour. These were symbols proclaiming their identity. Pirates carried their own "scary" flags. So, the purpose of a flag was to dispense information about the wearer or the owner.

The modern world, however, has brought new meaning to the flags of the world. The flag of a particular country signifies unity among the citizens. By coming together under one flag and one symbol, they proclaim their patriotism. Even cultural differences get wiped out, since the Flag accepts all races and religions. This simple cloth held by a stick is symbolic (beliefs held by that particular country), nationalistic (citizenship of that particular country), and has subconscious power (to change attitudes or evoke long-buried feelings). Any important event, be it an International Conference or national festival, is incomplete without the necessary flag in place! Thus, manufacturers have now come up with the idea of desk flags to keep the patriotic spirit flying high.

The concept of flags has carried over to the sports arena too. The Olympian spirit is best conveyed by its flag and it shows the five continents coming together in friendly competition. The white background is to symbolise peace.

Since it is not possible to discuss global flags here, let us concentrate on the English Flag and what it means to an Englander. If you ever visit this country, you will see the flag displayed in numerous places; such is the feeling of patriotism here. Parliament buildings, clubs, different organisations, and even individual houses proudly proclaim their nationality via the flag. But nowhere is patriotic fervour more in display as when there is an International sporting event. The football World Cup garners the most attention.

The flag, itself, is quite impressive. It carries the banner of the Red Cross of St. George (England's patron saint) portrayed against a white background. Imagine having a miniature version in front of you that you can view everyday; how good it will make you feel!
