If you have been considering a move overseas and perhaps have looked at places such as Thailand or even China as the ESL hotspot then why not consider South Korea instead. South Korea is a great place for teaching English as not only can you enjoy a high salary but the vibrant night life of places such as Seoul or the wonderful and popular area of Busan in the south means that even if you go alone you will always meet fellow Westerners that are teaching English to the natives.

Before you make a decision about teaching English in this country you must prepare yourself for a huge culture shock. Unlike Thailand, South Korea can be quite a difficult place for a Westerners to comfortably integrated into. This does not necessarily mean that South Korea is an unfriendly place but the culture is often misunderstood and enthusiastic first-time ESL teachers are often put off as they arrive in Korea. Remember that in rural Korea many people have not had contact with Westerners and therefore are wary about foreign people on their land.

Although with ESL teachers that decide to really push their boundaries and perhaps learn some of the language and culture, suddenly this country becomes one the best destinations for teaching English with a wide variety of exotic and interesting foods, absolutely stunning countryside and scenery and world-class night life full of international communities working in all sorts of different industries.

It is often a daunting task to actually think about leaving your own home and taking off into the sunset in search of an ESL career. If you are one of these people then you may have already carried out significant research on different countries, yet after weeks and weeks of wondering just where it is you want to go you end up sitting down and scratching your head.
Simply put, if it is a deep and diverse culture you wish to experience then Korea is certainly the country you should consider.

Many people who currently teach English in South Korea have enjoyed years or even decades of teaching English at the same schools or language centres due to the fact that not only are you able to build a solid career as a foreigner in this country, but remuneration is attractive and the cost of living is surprisingly low.

South Korea is also popular with fresh university graduates. This is simply down to the fact that as already mentioned, the salary is high and the cost of living is low. Not only will you be able to save money from one month to the next but if you choose the right type of employer they will often offer a 12 month contract completion bonus, equivalent to 2 months salary.

So, if you are brave enough to experience the diverse culture of South Korea and would also like to enjoy remuneration that allows you great weekends away and even some money in the bank at the end of your contract, certainly look to teach English in South Korea.
