South African bloggers and the blog “awards”

By: marcashton

SA “bloggers” are an easy bunch to rattle at the best of times but now that the SA Blog awards have arrived, hormones are pumping, purses are flying and the tit for tat blog postings are flying backwards and forwards. It’s brilliant.

Renowned local social satirist and some time journalist David Bullard rattled the cages of local bloggers last year and to be honest I don’t think that the local community has ever truly recovered from the affront on their contribution to society. The reaction he elicited could have been compared to a night on the Cape Flats after a local drug dealing kingpin had been “whacked” – gangs were coming out left, right and centre.
The best way to keep track of all of these postings is to sit on Muti and watch as the technocrats start posting links to their “formal” responses to the “formal” responses posted on their personal blogs as they trade opinions…. I would love to know what these guys would do if they ever had to sit in a room across the table from one another – would they all haul out their cellphones, plug into their 3G and begin frantically typing responses to upload to their blogs?!

Guys lets be honest for a moment. If you want somebody to take these awards seriously and to take your web skills and presence as a business asset to them then things have to change… This annual Miss America hormone rush is amusing but not exactly riveting stuff.

Before any of you start jumping up and down saying that I miss the point of “Blogging” and it has nothing to do with web skills and being a “business asset” I’m going to stop you – it does… Most of the major bloggers work in the SA Media or technology industries and people DO pay them to make informed decisions about web strategy, marketing and communications. Maybe it is time to start rewarding bloggers and local web strategists who can demonstrate collaborative solutions with business. Produce something that is actually measurable.

Maybe the blogging theme for 2008 (For bloggers who get their knickers in a knot over how awards and categories were chosen this year) should be “Measurable, collaborative solutions”…
