Source of credit reports: Where do they come from?

By: Jason Uvios

Making a credit report is no child's play. All sorts of information regarding a person's credit identity have to be collected, chalked out and then schematically framed in the credit report. A lot has to be worked out for just a report and a slight error completely changes the authenticity of the record.

Erroneous reports make a negative impact in every respect and it's again a big headache to get things right. Therefore the part of information collection till the documentation and drafting of the report you cannot take things lightly. After all you are dealing with facts and figures which have a broader purpose to fulfill. The credit report will build up your credit image in the society.

Seeking credit information

The collector of the credit information has to be an organized body which will further forward this information for the making of the credit report. A credit bureau takes this responsibility. It is the basic level organization working as a primary source of the credit information for the credit reports.

More than thousand credit bureaus work together in different regions. They divide their sphere of information gathering and proceed in their collection of the authentic report from the horse's mouth. The credit bureau professionals collect the first-hand information from the creditors and tally them with the consumer for the final reporting.

The local or the regional bureau involved in this process of information gatherer cannot on their own take the lead in making the credit report. This is not their cup of tea. Authorization and power has been given to three national-level credit bureaus that will remain responsible for the further process. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are to name the three national credit bureaus which work above the local bureaus. These credit bureaus are also known as Credit Reporting agencies (CRA).

Liability of CRA

It is not just the work of the credit bureaus to seek for credit information round the town. The creditors and every individual involved in credit transaction and credit business have to take responsibility. It's a part of their duty to inform CRA about the credit deals made per month. A symbiotic relationship between the creditors, consumers and the credit bureaus is built up to produce an authentic credit report where the final liability lies with the Credit Reporting Agency. It is the source of a credit report and responsible for authenticity of a credit report and its verifications. Any changes in the credit report required will also be conducted by them.
