Sony Tablet Pcs For Mobile Warriors

By:

The new set of Sony tablet PCs are targeted to be winners. The company announced them during April 2011. They mark the first Sony foray into this segment. The Apple iPad is clearly in target to smash, but we need to wait until later this year to see just how successful Sony will be. They will be available to consumers around September or October, maybe later.

Tablets form the fastest growing market segment within the personal computer market. The segment was created by Apple which leads innovation for mobile personal computing and telephony. Overall tablet sales accelerated during 2010 to globally total more than 10 million units, up from only 90,000 in 2009 based on figures announced by the US Consumer Electronics Association. Analysts predict that 21 million of the devices will be purchased in 2011 with 26.5 million in 2012. Personal computer and notebook sales have slowed as more and more people switch over to tablets, particularly in the USA and Europe.

One rival unveiled its new tablet in February 2011. The model has an LCD screen similar to the iPad 10-inch screen. It is slightly thicker at 10.9 millimeters versus the slimmer 8.8 millimeters for the iPad 2.

Technology research firm Strategy Analytics predicts tablet sales will have grown to a value of around US$50 billion by about 2015. The mobile PC devices have received strong support from consumers who see them as a useful bridge between smart phones and notebook PCs. Tablets provide Wi-Fi connectivity, a multimedia capability and powerful mobile computing in a compact package.

With a starting price that many see as hefty, Apple sold almost 15 million iPads during calendar 2010 to representing a revenue of almost US$10 billion. That is big business, and one that rivals like Sony are eager to conquer.

Prototypes of the two new tablets have been given to analysts. Both have an Android 3.0 operating system; but the similarity pretty much ends there. The two models are distinctly different, particularly in shape and size.

The larger S1 model has one single 9.4 inch screen with a camera at both the front and at the rear. The unit is light and its screen bright. The casing has a slight wedge shape with one end slightly thicker than the other. This provides it with a tight comfortable grip, making it easy to hold.

The smaller S2 laptop-shaped model is smaller and folds like a clam. Folded, it fits easily into a coat pocket or handbag. Opened, the S2 reveals two 5.5 inch screens, one on the base the other on the lid. Purists claim this clamshell shape means it is not a tablet; but that seems rather pedantic and puerile.

The soon-to-be-available Sony tablet PCs will be a welcome addition to the range of devices available to consumer hungry for mobile Wi-Fi connectivity. They could seriously challenge the dominance of Apple in the niche. But we must wait until later this year to see the final product. We live in hope.
