The tail is the back of the board and this is just after the mounting holes. The way to tell the nose from the tail is by the fact that the tail is slightly shorter and slimmer than the front.

The length and width are very important factors to any skateboard deck. These things will determine a number of things and you should find one that is comfortable for you. The deck's length is the measurements from the nose to where the tail ends. An average board will be around 28 to 32 inches. How wide a deck is will determine the types of tricks you can do. The average deck width is seven and a half to eight and a quarter inches.

The mounting holes on the deck are also important. Without them there would be no place for the wheels. These are always already drilled and will be located in the front and back. The wheelbase is the area between a pair of mounting holes to another pair. The choice of this is dependent on how tall the rider is although the average is a thirteen to fifteen inch base.

Decks will consist of a number of ply layers. When viewing a deck from the side it is possible to observe the layers. Most decks are made of wood with the most common being Canadian Maple. Having the layers in a multi-grain pattern is a means of making a board stronger. 7 ply layers is the most common amount for most decks.

The concave of a deck will affect the way that the rider uses their board. The area of the deck between the start and end where the board curves slightly to the sides is the concave. Control is what is determined by the concave and why it is so important.

A skateboard deck is made up of a number of different things. All these factors must be understood before buying one so that you will know that you have got the best deck for you and what you want to do.
