Some Important Info About Solar Power And Reality

By:

The most common alternative energy source, solar energy is a very powerful and a completely free way of producing electric power to a home. Year after year solar panel kits have gone from a complex science, to a do-it-yourself home development project. With some planning, time and DIY skills, we can easily set up our own solar panels and generate enough electricity to power our home.

Solar cells, are also called photovoltaic cells, are made of silicon that absorbs light from the sun. Basically, when light strikes the cell, a definite portion of it is absorbed within the semiconductor material. The sunbeam that hits the photovoltaic cell is made of photons, or particles of light energy. When the photons strike the cell, some are reflected or go right through, but others are absorbed to supply energy. The cell is specially treated so that free electrons produce on the surface. When the photons are absorbed, they strike electrons in the silicon and move them out of place. When enough of the electrons are knocked out of place and rush to the surface, it creates a negatively charged surface and a positively charged underside. This condition creates a voltage potential, similar to a battery.

After the solar panels have converted the sunbeam into electricity the charge is then stored in a DC battery. When we need to draw on the energy the DC charge passes via an inverter which converts it to AC electricity. Electricity produced from a solar energy system can provide at least part of the regular power requirements for the average household. Larger arrays of solar panels in areas with strong and abundant sunlight can produce enough electricity to run a whole home without having to rely on the electric grid.

Of course we can find solar panels all over the web. Solar panels may be purchased as stand alone units, or we can pick up one of the solar DIY kits from a reputable source which generally include everything we need for a small starter system. This type of kit is ideal for learning the basics of setting up a non-complex solar system. A solar water heater is also a wonderful choice for a first solar project which can pay for itself in a small amount of time.

If we are on a tight budget, we can look at purchasing one of the DIY guides to construct our project from scratch. These instructions are wonderful resource for learning how a solar panel or wind powered generator work and how everything comes together to take sunbeam (or wind) and turn it into usable electricity.

Solar panel is advantageous over other process. Solar panel is clean. It creates no pollution. It is saves money. It reduces taxes. It requires minimum maintenance.

Beside advantages, it has some disadvantages. It has upfront cost (installation can be costly; unless we decide to do the work ourselves. 24 hours power supply is not possible. Only produces power in sunlight.
