Solving Common Kitchen Sink Problems

By:

Before calling out a plumber for your kitchen sink there are 3 common irritants that can be easily solved without the need for a plumber. Many people just "put up" with problems in their kitchen sink because they think they will need to call a plumber out, when in actual fact there are a lot of plumbing problems that can be resolved with a bit of dimple diy.

A dripping tap

The constant dripping of a tap can be very irritating within the home. Not only that but you can also waste lots of water which is bad for the environment and your utility bills. If you fixed your dripping tap you could see a significant decrease in your utility bills. Fixing a dripping tap usually means replacing the washer which has worn down and is causing the tap to leak. If this is the case it's a very simple procedure and washers can be purchased from hardware stores. If this doesn't fix the problem it may be worth calling a local plumber in to fix the leak and save money on your utility bill.

Foul Odour

Many people experience a foul smell emitting from their drains. This is usually due to food particles getting stuck in different parts of the pipes. If left without eliminating the odour the smell can worsen and linger for a long time. Simple home mixtures such as vinegar and baking soda, citrus rind or bleach. These acidic products are great at eliminating odour and the citrus rind would eliminate the odour and whilst adding a sweet fragrance to your sink. If you have a grinder then food could be lodged in the mechanisms. To dislodge any stuck food pop a few small ice cubes down the drain and turn the grinder on, this should dislodge the food without damaging the grinding mechanisms. To avoid food getting lodged in your grinder in future avoid putting thick foods down there such as breads and cut up meat into small pieces. Always avoid putting bones down there.

Low Pressure

Sometimes your home can suffer from low pressure. Before starting to worry make sure you check that there are no plumbing works going on in your area that may temporarily effect the pressure of your water. If it's just your house it can be common that you experience low water pressure in the kitchen but not in the bathrooms. Be sure to check that you have no internal leaks in your tap as this can cause water pressure problems. Also, broken tap fixtures can cause water pressure problems so replacing this fixture can remedy the problem. If the low water pressure is causing you problems it may be worth calling in a plumber to assess the situation. Fixing common kitchen sink problems can really improve your kitchen experience. Rather than putting up with the problems try to eliminate them to prevent future annoyance and maintain a pleasant kitchen experience.
