Solid State Disks: Easily Portable, Reliable And Energy Efficient

By:

In todays enlightened and technology-driven world, we always anticipate the next big thing. Whether it is the processor of a computer or a hard drive, we often see the upgrade of these devices. And, we always seek those things that are faster, smarter and easy to use. In the current time, solid state drives are the things that have created buzz in the storage device manufacturing industry. Now, most of manufacturing industries are concentrating more in this field.
Solid state disk or drive, called SSD, is a data storage device that uses Solid State memory to store data. The original usage of the term solid-state refers to the use of semiconductor devices rather than electron tubes. Solid state drive (SSD) is the technology that is competing with the conventional hard-drive (HDD). As the Solid State Disk is not mechanical; it is based on "flash memory", the same computer chip technology used to store pictures with your digital camera.
In recent years, hard-drive memory capacities have improved significantly, the access speed has remained relatively constant. It is a kind of issue which is fundamental to the technology. The hard-drive is mechanical, and efforts to improve speed have been receiving diminishing returns. On the other hand, SSB provides higher reliability and faster performance than traditional magnetic hard disks. With no moving parts, solid-state drives are less fragile than hard disks and are also silent, except a cooling fan is used, as there are no mechanical delays, they usually enjoy low access time and latency.
As SSD is 4X smaller and lighter, it can do better than conventional mechanical hard drives. There are various benefits of Solid state drives over the magnetic hard drives. The majority of this comes from the fact that the drive does not have any moving parts. But the problem with SSD is the cost and memory capacity. Most SSD drives announced at the 2007 CES show are of the 64GB capacity. This means that not only are the drives much more expensive than a traditional hard drive, they only hold a fraction of the data.
While a traditional drive has drive motors to spin up the magnetic platters and the drive heads, all the storage on a solid state drive is handled by flash memory chips. The major benefits which are differentiator between magnetic storage device and SSD include:
Less power consumption: As there is no power draw for the motors, the drive uses far less energy than the regular hard drive.
Faster Data Access: Since the drive doesn't have to spin up the drive platter or move drive heads, the data can be read from the drive near instantly.
Higher Reliability: Since the SSD stores all its data in memory chips, there are fewer moving parts to be damaged in any sort of impact.
Solid State Disks are the best drop-in replacement for high-maintenance HDDs where reliability is a major concern offering the performance and reliability needed by mission critical applications such as enterprise computing, servers, networking, and high performance computing.
