Social Media Policies Can Improve Business Performance

By:

Businesses can improve employee performance by implementing guidelines relating to social media use.

Recent research by harmon.ie revealed that employees that regularly use social networking tools are costing the economy millions as the interruptions are damaging their productivity levels.

The cross-platform enterprise solutions company claims that over half of interruptions at work are the result of emails, text messages, instant messaging or social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Yaacov Cohen, chief executive of harmon.ie, said that many employees are suffering from 'online compulsive disorder' caused by their personal life behaviour intruding on the office workplace.

He said: "Information technology that was designed at least in part to save time is actually doing precisely the opposite. The very tools we rely on to do our jobs are also interfering with that mission."

Mr Cohen believes that social media is a hindrance to business performance; however, utilising these tools in an effective manner can actually improve productivity as long as employees understand what constitutes appropriate use.

Organisations that are concerned about how social media may be affecting their employees can benefit from releasing an official policy document that will explain what they expect from their employees.

The decline in the use of email means that businesses should embrace different tools as a way of communicating with colleagues and clients such as instant messaging and social media.

If a company is worried that their employees may be using the internet appropriately, it is inadvisable to monitor their online behaviour as this autocratic action may damage morale.

Employee performance must be judged on the quality of their output and not on their activity so if workers continue to be productive then they should enjoy the freedom to browse the internet without fear of disciplinary action.

Social media guidelines will demonstrate to employees how they can use the internet to gain knowledge, share learning and communicate with colleagues who may be working from home or out of the country.

Sharing knowledge is the most important aspect of social media as this involvement will cutback on time spent researching information and will eliminate the potential of duplicated effort.

Performance improvement consulting experts can advise companies how to examine their organisation and measure employee productivity in order to enhance processes and increase productivity.

Improvement consultants can apply proven business theory so that organisations can discover how to reduce costs while increasing productivity and efficiency at the same time.
