Snorkeling Tips For Beginners

By:

Why should anyone want to try snorkeling? Every time we go on a family vacation I try to make sure that we can all get some snorkeling time in. The enjoyment that you get from being able to have such an amazing view of the underwater animals and wildlife is simply unparallelled.

I've tried scuba diving on a number of occasions and as much as I enjoyed it, I have to say that I prefer the freedom of snorkeling. You don't need a whole car full of expensive equipment and extensive amounts of training or licenses to go snorkeling, but you do with scuba. Don't get me wrong, I really did enjoy my scuba diving experiences and you can go so much deeper with all that equipment. What I love about snorkeling though is that you can just pop on your snorkel, mask and fins and away you go.

When first starting out with snorkeling make sure that you stick to the shallow waters until you get confident. It takes a short while to get used to breathing through the snorkel and you also need to get used to swimming around with the mask and fins.

As you are paying so much attention to what is happening underwater, it is very easy to get lost in all the beauty that you see below the waves. Brightly colored tropical fish and wondrous coral reef are just mesmerizing.

You need to be careful that you don't get too lost in all that underwater beauty and forget your surroundings. You need to be aware of where you are in relation to the shore and your friends. As you can imagine, it's very easy to get lost in the underwater world, but this can be dangerous if you aren't careful, so stick to the shoreline until you are confident and comfortable. You need to know about whether there are any strong undercurrents or tides that could effect your snorkeling session.

I'll conclude with two pieces of advice that I wish someone had told me about before I first went snorkeling. Firstly, don't think that just because you a partially submerged that you can skimp on sunscreen. I ended my first snorkeling day a very happy, but particularly sunburned man. Secondly get hold of an underwater disposable camera. These things are relatively cheap but do take good quality images of all the flora and fauna that you'll see beneath the waves.
