Sniff The Saline, Or Spray The Saline?

Sniff The Saline, Or Spray The Saline?

By:

Today somebody asked me about why it's better to sniff saline solution from your hand as opposed to using a spray bottle. This is a good question so I want to go into a little detail here.

I want to be clear that it's not a bad thing to spray the salt water solution into your nose using a spray bottle. I just think that you achieve more when you sniff it from your hand. Using the spray bottle is a great way to moisturize the nose, and this is particularly useful during the winter when the house humidity can get as low as the desert, around 3%.

The main negative for just using a spray solution from a bottle is that you will not usually spray up enough solution to mobilize or move secretions that might be in the way of the sinus passages. When they are in the way of the sinus openings it has the effect of plugging the sinuses. The way most people use a saline nasal spray, the effect is to maybe make the nose run a little but no real effect on the sinuses.

Sniffing the saline solution from the palm of the hand has a quite different effect on the nose compared to using the nasal spray bottle. The sheer increased volume of solution inevitably moves secretions much more effectively. When these secretions are in the way of the sinus opening the effect is to clear the opening of the sinuses. This lets air get in and out of the sinus which decreases the odds that the sinus will have an infection from bacteria.

There is an exception to what I just said about using the nasal saline spray as an alternative. If you spray 10- 20 sprays up each nostril while you keep sniffing the saline, you will also mobilize secretions and perhaps help to keep the sinus openings clear of mucus secretions. It's still not as good as the hand held irrigation from sniffing from your hand, but it's better than just the moisturizing effect.

So to be effective in mobilizing the secretions that are blocking your nasal passages and especially your sinuses, you need to create a lot of volume of saline solution in the nose some way. While it works best to sniff if from the palm of your hand, you can use the spray bottle as I outlined above.
