Smoke Damage To Your Documents

By:

Do you know what smoke damage can do to documents? When there is smoke in your house, the smoke will give off gases and those gases are what cause the smoke damage to get on your stuff. When you try to get them back the way they were, it will be very difficult to do and it will take time because you have to be careful with the papers. Smoke damage can get on and in books, all types of papers, pictures, and folders. There are three types of smoke damages: fuel oil soot, wet smoke, and dry smoke. Each will damage your documents in different ways.

Fuel oil soot comes from furnaces when it releases gritty puffs of soot. It is like an abrasive, and it damages books, documents, or any types of paper. This smoke can come out of ventilation systems, and it can get into your plumbing. It easily can move through your house and get into every room or any small areas. It also likes to move to cool areas.

Wet smoke damage is caused by smoldering smoke that is a low heat type of smoke, which is a sticky residue. The residue is hard to get off without damaging them more than they already are. It will warp any type of book, and it will stain the papers. Papers can stick together, and you will have to pull them apart very slowly so they don't get ruined.

Dry smoke damage is caused when a fire is burning fast and the temperature is hot and very high. This really does a number to very old paper and books. This may do too much damage, and you might not get them cleaned. You will probably have to replace them if you can. With newer papers, it will depend on the type of damage that it causes.

If the damage is too bad, you might want to get a professional to clean and restore them because they are specialized in that field of work. You will also notice that your papers, documents, and books have a smoky smell to them, and they can get that smell off the things. Some professionals will use a certain gas called an ozone gas chamber to get out the stains, odors, and anything that is on them. Do not clean or handle the books, papers, or the documents yourself because you will damage them even more, and you will leave fingerprints on them, which will make it even harder for them to clean.
