Smoke Alarms Can Save Lives In All Sorts Of Ways

By:

Smoke alarms have been on the market for quite a few years and they are not at all expensive when considering the cost of a human life or that of an entire family. The problem in having them fitted would depend on if it was a rental property and the tenant would not feel it was his responsibility to have the cost of the alarm on his shoulders. Landlords are also tired of replacing the unit or its batteries, when a tenant leaves.

Recently, a senior citizen in Kent perished in a house fire because he did not have a smoke alarm. He was deaf, blind in one eye and he had glaucoma in the other eye. He was also weak in the legs so he could not have escaped the fire very easily. The problem was that neither he nor his family knew that there were vibrating smoke alarms and infra-red alarms for those who had similar disabilities. It could have made the difference in saving his life.

A middle-aged woman recently perished in a house fire in which there was no smoke alarm fitted. It is so frustrating to find a fatality in a fire when an alarm could have done the trick to wake up the tenant and she would have survived. The elderly seem to be especially susceptible to fires in the home, perhaps due to cigarette smoking while falling asleep or cooking chips in a pan in the kitchen.

There are a great many types of smoke alarms on the market now. The ionization alarm is the cheapest and the most common. It is very sensitive and it can detect a fire in the kitchen before the smoke becomes too heavy and thick. The optical alarm is a bit more expensive but it is capable of detecting a smouldering slow burning fire or over-heated wiring. This style is best for ground floor hallways and one level bungalows.

There are many styles from which to choose. Some come with a flashlight to find your way through heavy smoke, some come with vibrating pads for the hearing-impaired or deaf, some can be interconnected from one alarm to the next in a larger home and the list is endless. But the best one is the cheapest, easy to install and battery checked regularly. When you hear the loud chirping noise, you know it is time to change the batteries.
