Smoke Alarms: Are They Working?

By:

According to the BBC, a 23 year old gentleman in Coventry never awoke during a fire which took his life. He did not have a smoke alarm fitted and as a result he did not wake up when the fire started. Hundreds of these same type stories occur every year and yet most homes and flats are still not fitted with them or they are tampered with.

Fire brigades are now offering free alarms and they will come into your home and fit them where they deem necessary. This free service is in response to the many unnecessary deaths that result from not having an alarm, or from having the batteries removed and used elsewhere in other electronics.

It may one day also become law to have carbon monoxide detectors in your homes as well. Carbon monoxide is a deadly poisonous gas which is odourless, tasteless and cannot be seen. It occurs when a carbon fuel, such as petrol, ignites with little oxygen, such as a car left running in a sealed up garage. The carbon dioxide oozes into the garage or into the house and the occupants are overcome by the fumes and they fall into a coma or, worse yet, death.

In other developed countries, a lot of homes automatically have a garage to store your car. Some house designs have the split with the bedrooms up above the garage. Well, more families have suffered carbon dioxide poisoning due to the parents warming up the car, leaving it running in the closed garage, and going inside to have another coffee. It only takes a few minutes to happen.

Fire brigades, according to the BBC, are also becoming infuriated with the number of unnecessary calls they make to smoke alarm calls or fire alarm calls in which there is no fire. It could be a hot steamy shower, a cooking mishap or a chemical imbalance of some nature. Now the fire brigade in Manchester is trying to cut down on the number of false calls and they ask the callers to check and see if there is actually a fire brewing before they start out.

There are a remarkable number of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors on the market that it is a shame that all homes do not have them installed. For such little cost, it is worth the piece of mind to have these fire signals working and protecting your family.
