Small Wind Turbines - #1 Benefit

By:

150 years ago, small wind turbine power was prevalent power source . Then, along came fossil fuels and the age of "public power" took over.

Traditionally, public power plants make the electricity for your home and distribute it through wires they own. Most people see the overhead wires that canvas most cities as a necessary evil but an eyesore. In many places around the country, the sky is becoming obscured by the density of overhead wires.

Power from small wind turbines is increasingly becoming the way to eliminate the need for "public power". Since you can purchase a windmill for your home now, you can eliminate in part or completely the need for the wires coming to your house.

What is the number one reason wind power is popular?

Is it energy independence? Is it the cost savings?

Actually, it is that we have NO CHOICE. Fossil fuels that power our electricity generating plants are running out and we know it.

Despite all the screaming voices on TV that say we AREN'T running out, we know deep down that is not true. We will either deal with this issue or force it on the backs of our children or grandchildren.

We are not usually very good as a species at dealing with our demons before it is too late. However, I think we know in our core that we must address dwindling oil supplies. The Middle East is a political train wreck. The power companies are completely hostage to them and raise their prices constantly.

The great thing about wind power is that it is perpetual and it is free. Widespread adoption of wind energy would mean independence from the insanity that grips our economies in free societies in having to deal with the hassle of foreign wars to protect strategic natural resources.

Barriers to wind turbine power in the past are quickly falling away. For years, the first cost of the turbines were the main obstacle. Recently, governments and utility companies are subsidizing the purchase of renewable technology, including wind energy.

Also, the "speed barrier" has been a hurdle. Most small wind turbines have required at least 8-10 mph winds to begin making power. That is no longer the case. Lately, windmill designs have come on the market that begin generating power as low as 2 mph. That dramatically changes the number of homes that can benefit from small wind turbine power.

What is the future of wind turbine power? As prices for home windmills continue to drop, expect more and more vertical- and horizontal-axis turbines to be planted all over the place.

Eventually, we may even be able to even see the sky again.
