Small Business Owners Can't Afford High Business Energy Costs

By:

Small businesses are particularly vulnerable to suffering from business energy costs spiralling out of control, as they have for years now. Many smaller businesses, in order to be successful, must operate on a "shoestring" budget and that means they have got to cut corners wherever possible. Gas and electricity are vital to everyone and a business owner realises that to survive in this economy they must keep the cost of these items down.

Many who try to wean themselves away from fossil fuel forms of energy are finding that it's not all that easily accomplished. Ever since the privatisation of the United Kingdom's generating industry, the Government has tried through the Non Fossil Fuel Obligation. They gave evidence of support for nuclear generators that are state owned. Now British Energy, which is a private sector company, has become in charge of the UK's nuclear plants. We must each support the use of alternative sources of energy like nuclear, wind, and hydro (water) - and any new ideas must be welcomed and developed.

Nuclear power now generates fully one fifth of the UK's electricity, where it previously amounted to just over twenty five percent. Power plants have closed over the years, lowering the amount of energy that can be derived from that source of energy.

For the energy use of businesses (both large as well as small) to ever become reasonable in cost, there must be other methods of generating energy than the old fossil fuel forms. Oil cost has become prohibitive for all of us. Coal is a more reasonable form of energy as far as cost of the product, yet there are a myriad of issues involved in that form of energy generation. Nuclear, wind turbines, hydro electricity, geothermal, and solar will each become the energy sources for the future of this planet.
One method of learning about how much electricity is involved in daily business energy usage is to monitor it by reading and learning from an electricity usage monitor. They are well worth purchasing as they will show where energy is wasted and money is lost. The usage will be broken down in peak times and which electronic devices and appliances are using the most at which times.

The biggest users of electricity in a business environment or a home are the heating and air conditioning systems. Also lighting and any other electric appliances tend to be "energy hogs" that shrink a business profit margin remarkably. It will help to monitor the usage of various devices and shut off what is not absolutely necessary. If part of the store can do without being fully lighted part of the day, which will save significantly over a one year period of time. Also turning down the heating thermostat in winter and raising the setting in summer can save hundreds during the year's use.

Unplug any appliances when not in use. Televisions, radios, and other entertainment-type devices do use electricity, even when they are turned off. In order to conserve on your business energy usage everything must be suspect as being the energy hogs that take money straight from your wallet.
