Skin Tags: What Are They?

Acrochordon is the technical name for skin tags (plural acrochorda). Whenever there are folds in the skin, it is very possible for this kind of small tumor to appear. Also known as fibro epithelial polyp or cutaneous skin tag, this is a benign condition which means it is not a severe condition with no apparent pain and growth involved. The neck, armpit, and groin are three body parts where skin tags can normally be seen. The eyelids can also be affected by this classification of formation.

Skin tags do not have the same sizes; some are as small as a grain of rice, while others are as large as a grape. Skin tags have a smooth and irregular texture. There is ordinarily a fleshy stalk known as peduncle where the skin tag is raised off. It can be determined under the microscope that the epidermis makes up the covering of the fibro-vascular core. Skin tags are very probable to occur to pregnant women and diabetic individuals. There is a popular belief in the world of medicine that skin tags manifest because of the rubbing up of skin against skin. The basis for this is the development of skin tags in skin areas that are folded and creased.

There are several skin tag removal techniques that are widely used these days. These include cryosurgery, cauterization, excision, and surgical ligation. There are cases when tags can be easily scratched away despite of minimal bleeding. Over the counter solutions can also be used. For just a couple of weeks, skin tags fall off the skin due to the freezing used by this type of solution.
