Anyone with kids needs to know the basics of typical childhood skin conditions. Kids will show up with cuts, scratches, rashes, and any number of bumps and odd looking bites throughout childhood. A common ailment among kids is ringworm. It is very distinctive and easily identified due to the ring shape of the infection. Misconception is that there is no worm involved as the name would indicate. It is caused by fungi. This fungus can cause skin issues known as dermatophytes. It infects the dead layer of keratin and does not survive on anything that has mucous membranes. Ringworm is easily treated by applying an anti fungal medication on the skin.

Anytime that kids get the chance they will run through the woods. That can quite often mean running into some poison ivy. Poison ivy, oak, and sumac are all typical causes of contact dermatitis. Basically a rash will result from the skin having an allergic reaction to the resin released by these plants. Not everyone will have a reaction to poison ivy. For those that do though red bumps will pop up and are very itchy.

Some people react immediately to the resin contact while others will not have the rash appear until a few days after coming in contact with the plant. People often think that the rash is spreading but in reality it is taking some areas longer to react. These rashes are not contagious so you don't have to worry about staying away from people. For mild cases a cortisone cream will help relieve the itch before the blisters appear. It's a good idea to keep some on hand.

Most skin conditions that arise during childhood can be easily remedied. Most skin conditions can be treated with a topical creme.
