Skin Care Products Urban Legends

By:

Everyone has heard of the urban legend about the pop rocks and soda, or how about the one that deals with the babysitter and the phone call. All stories supposedly told based on a true story, but who knows if it is real. The same can go for the skin care products urban legends and myths that are told to millions of people every day. Yes, there are old wives tales about different situations and skin care products that produce either a negative outcome or positive results. But, out of all these urban legends and myths, which ones really work and which ones are just made up stories?

The first urban legend I wanted to talk about relates to acne: Acne is caused by being dirt on the face and not washing your face enough. Could this have been made up by the skin care products industry so that people would buy more skin care products? Perhaps but the truth is that, although the part about using a good skin care product on your face should be an essential to everyone, acne is not caused by dirt or surface oil on our face. Acne is caused inside the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. The reason that acne appears is due to a specific bacteria that gets trap in these follicles along with dead skin cells. When they get trapped, they try to push their way out of your skin producing those nasty pimples we all dread. So in reality, that fact about not washing our faces enough is probably pretty accurate to a portion of why acne is caused (the dead skin cell part) but surface dirt will not cause acne to form like everyone says. Just use high quality skin care products on your skin that have ingredients for killing bacteria and removing dead skin cells and you should be good. It is okay to get a little dirty once in a while.

Another urban legend in regards to skin care products comes in the form of a puffy eyes remedy. It has been said that Preparation H, the hemorrhoid cream for those who do not know, is a very effective skin care treatment in reducing the puffiness of our eyes. Although in theory it may sound like a pretty good one, I mean it takes down the swelling of hemorrhoids why wouldn't take away the swelling of your eyes, it is not true at all. Hemorrhoids and eye puffiness are caused by two completely different reasons. Puffy eye deals with fluid retention and the like, while hemorrhoids are all about blood vessel constriction . So not only will Preparation H not be an effective skin care product for your eyes, the ingredients in the hemorrhoid cream may actually irritate your skin even further. So use this hemorrhoid product for what is meant for, not anything else.

Our next urban legend or myth goes back to acne and also dry skin. Tanning, said to supposedly help these conditions is a TOTAL falsie!! Not only is it untrue, but potentially very damaging and dangerous to the skin. Using your tanning salon as a skin care remedy for your acne by supposedly drying up the excess oils on your face is not true. This skin care myth possibly started because an exposure to sun, causing a sun tan, will be able to mask the appearance of acne but will do nothing for curing it. Actually, a sun tan is another word for skin damage. You are allowing the dangerous UV rays of the sun to enter into your skin readily eventually causing early aging and possibly even cancer. So treat acne the right way, by using skin care product designed to treat and heal acne, not the sun. Save your skin any extra stress and use a sun block, you will be happy that you did.

For one of the final urban legends that I will be talking about is in reference to people telling you that by doing facial exercises will tone your skin and allow for youthful looking skin. This actually has been known to stretch the skin out further, increasing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. See, out of all the skin care urban legends this one surprised me the most, I always thought that exercise tightens skin, but I guess in the case of your face it is not so true. So the only way to relieve your skin of wrinkles and lines is by either skin care products designed with special ingredients for healing wrinkles from the inside out or an anti aging procedure.

There are so many more urban legends in regards to skin care products and procedures that I could go on and on. So the next time someone tells you that something that seems very unlikely should be used in place of a skin care product or that a certain element causes a certain reaction, take the advice with a grain of salt. Do your research to find out the truth, and always listen to the professionals. They went to school to learn how to treat your skin and give you the best advice regarding skin care products, so they should be one of the only sources to look for regarding your skin.
