Skin Care Pregnancy Help And Advice

By:

You are constantly being told of what you can and can't do during your pregnancy, some items your really should look into though. There are foods you shouldn't eat and even skin care products that you shouldn't use: salicylic acid, phthalates, retinoids, and even some kinds of sunscreens. So what can should you use for skin care resulting from pregnancy?

Pregnancy Mask

Genetics, hormone levels, and how much sun exposure you receive can all contribute to melasma (otherwise known as "pregnancy mask"), which is a condition that discolors your face. One way to reduce your chances of getting this condition is to stay out of the sun and avoid getting overheated during pregnancy.

Wearing sunscreen is also a necessity for avoiding this condition. You have to be careful, though, to use a sunscreen that does not contain micronized titanium or zinc as the micronized particles can enter your bloodstream (and thus reach your child) by being absorbed through the skin. One suggested sunscreen is ELTAMD's UV Physical SPF 41.

Pregnancy mask can also be treated by applying azeleic acid to the affected area. Azealic acid is available by prescription. It is safe to use during pregnancy and helps reduce discoloration.

Breakouts

Pregnancy, complete with all its stress, sends your hormone levels all over the place, thus potentially causing more acne breakouts. One of the best ways to combat acne is with a benzoyl peroxide cream. When you're pregnant, though, try using the creams that contain 2.5% benzoyl peroxide instead of the stronger 10%. On the Spot from Neutrogena is a good one for this. It works just as well as the stronger formulas, but won't irritate your skin as much. You can also get Neutrogena's Clear Pore Cleanser with benzoyl peroxide.

If you already have a stronger benzoyl peroxide cream, mix it with a facial lotion to dilute its potency. Note that prescription benzoyl and salicylic creams, as well as oral versions, are usually not taken during pregnancy. Be sure to check with your doctor before continuing use of the products during your pregnancy.

If you are experiencing irritation from your benzoyl peroxide cream, try taking vitamin B supplements as this will reduce inflammation. Cutting white rice, pasta, flour, and sugar out of your diet can also help reduce inflammation and the chances of breaking out.

Stretch Marks

Is there a way to reduce stretch marks? There is. Whereas many women believe that cocoa or shea butter lotion will help, the truth is that these products do not treat the cause of stretch marks. What you want to do is limit your weight gain, as much as you can, to about thirty pounds during pregnancy. This allows your skin to stay within a normal range of growth. You can also use lotions that contain alpha hydroxy acids and peptides. One such product is Regenerist by Olay. These types of lotions will strengthen and smooth your skin, thus reducing stretch marks.
