Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay

Otis Redding recorded 'Sittin' On The Dock of the Bay' in 1967, just three days before his death in a plane crash outside Madison, Wisconsin. The famous song tells the story of a man who with nothing to do and no prospective plans, spends his time sitting on the dock of the bay watching the tide roll away and the ships roll in. While most of us do have things to do there is something very true about Redding's lyrics in that, when we do find ourselves on the dock of the bay, it's because we are there relaxing.

Staring out at the water is one of the most peaceful things a person can do. The calm or the crash, they are both completely mesmerising and therapeutic. It's also a really nice thing to do on your own. The silence doesn't feel overwhelming because the movement of the water is there to keep you company. A person can completely tune out, relax, enjoy a glass of wine and just be with their thoughts. It's like time almost stops and we become one with nature. The ocean, and large bodies of water in general, are so vast and beautiful that they can suck even the least outdoorsy person into the natural world.

Some of the most beautiful times of day to sit by the water are first thing in the morning when the sun is just coming up and last thing at the end of the day just as it is going down. A lot of people like to go for walks or runs at this time of day. People also enjoy heading out to the beach or the dock and doing yoga, stretching or meditating in front of the calm. People who enjoy water sports like water skiing, will often go out at these times of day as the water tends to be flatter and easier to glide along.

Sitting on the dock of the bay doesn't mean that you have to sit on the dock. It can be quite nice to sit on a Muskoka chair, which is a wooden arm chair usually seen in cottage country, or on comfortable wicker furniture with big, cosy pillows. It might be nice to lie in a hammock under a tree next to the edge of a lake, or perhaps to float in your anchored boat as the sun goes down, and the salt of the sea starts to harden and fall of your tanned skin.
