Singing Bowls, Getting Ready For A Fight

By:

I have been training in Karate for almost 10 years now, I was in the first year of collage when I started to learn, mostly to fulfill a childhood dream that had spawned from watching too much Karate Kid more than anything else. In my defense I did try learning about the tea ceremony and growing bonsai trees too. But the tea ceremony seemed somewhat too buried in ritual to have any significance to me and the two bonsai trees I bought 2 year apart died in the first few months without any apparent reason to me since I had watered them and took care that they got plenty of sunlight.
Somehow I did stuck with the martial arts for a long time though and was getting quite good at it until a couple of years ago when I found the Karate Kid DVD again, watched it and I realized that somehow to core of the movie was in Mr. Miagis serene attitude towards life. So I started a quest to bring more spirituality in my practice. The logical place was to pick up Zen meditation. I started going to a course and after an hour of meditation I was so exhausted and bored that I thought I would never be able to do it.
Luckily the instructor hit a bowl to let us know an hour had passed and in the midst of my sleepy bored meditation the sound went through my head, down through my body like a lighting bolt. I almost jumped up and went straight to the master and asked him about the bowl. He told me it was actually a Tibetan singing bowl.
As soon as I got home I started reading about it and found this site about singing bowls. The site actually explained that a bowl is mostly used by rubbing a mallet on the outside and producing something that is called a song. I was very happy that they had links to all sorts of bowls and explained which one would be the best to get and way. I only bought one, the second or third because I wanted a richer sound and I have stuck with it for almost 5 years. I still like more hitting it as a bell rather than the sound it is meant to do but either way it has brought a spiritual aspect to my Karate practice. Sometimes my practice now feels more like a dance with an opponent than a fight and I am only now feeling that my childhood dream is fulfilled.
