Simple Warm-up Methods To Instantly Build Rapport

By:

This article is for those of us who either have the personality of Al Gore, who deal with social anxiety or who beleive that warming-up a client or prospect would have to be accomplished by some sort of electrical means. This article assumes (Nope, I don't fear that word) you've skimmed rapport building books and articles and realize that you still need a special something as part of the warm-up process; something that will create rapid rapport and give your target something to talk about. Admit it, not all of us have been blessed with "magnetic personality" we have always beleived to be a prerequisite for building rapport. This article will explore several Fundamental warm-up techniques that build instant rapport with little effort and help to take off the pressure.I've used these methods with awesome success and I know you will too!

Cut-Out to be a Cut-Up

Jokes are well known effective tools for the warm-up phase of business relations. Comedians historically achieved fame and fortune by warming-up the audience with something unique the audience didn't see coming. This is what they call their 'signature intro', 'move', 'line' or 'gag'. They know that something is needed to make them stand out from other comedians (*NOT recommending you do a Pratt fall). You can effortlessly find jokes online these days by searching the category of your choice. Try a few different ones to determine which works best for you, but be certain they are appropriate. An off-color joke can quickly diffuse any relationship, so be considerate. Ok, I know we're not all cut-out to be cut-ups, so what additional options can we look at?

A Feather For Her Hat

Try being visually unique! Our fashion of clothes, the style we cut our hair or even the car we drive, can lead to great conversation. Each will prep the opportunity to enquire about each others' interests. Most everyone likes to speak about their own fancies because it's an easy way for us to quickly tell a bit about who we are and what makes us unique. It's also a fantastic way to establish commonality. Here's a victorious example of this at play. I know a Realtor named "Pinky" who wears flamboyant hats everywhere she travels. No matter which hat she wears, it has a pink feather in it. Pinky may not be liked by everyone, but she is the busiest Real Estate agent in her town! She would proudly boast: "Everyone knows me by Pinky, whether or not we've been introduced". Both the hat & her intro line are no random boo boo. They are her signature and serve for instant conversation and better yet… banter and teasing!

Unique Business Cards

Let me be concise on this when I say "unique." I mean something so creatively different that it will stimulate fascinating conversation. Rather than telling a joke or probe with questions, let your unique card be the catalyst which fires-up your new relationship. With modern printing methods, business or signature cards come in any shape, size & thickness with many professionals opting for translucent plastic, metal to biodegradable rather than traditional card stock. Your imprint can be anything from metallic, shiny foil to glow-in-the-dark! If you have a active imagination and a creative side, you can have business cards designed to deliver the message like never before. A unique card will not only speak to your inimitableness as a creative force, but will grow unbelievable conversation which is what warming-up and establishing rapport is all about. Look for something new & exciting for your next business card!

Mr. Rogers & Oprah

Mr. Rogers sang often to us about the fact that "You Are Special" and I undisputably know that you are! We are all most definately unique, interesting beings otherwise television wouldn't be brimming with reality shows. We like to contemplate and to compare our lives to others perpetually.Oprah's new television network, OWN, features a competition between 15,000 contestants, all scatching and clawing for the ultimate reward of hosting their very own television show. Her number one advice she gave to the final 10 contestants was "Just be yourselves". I think Oprah subscribes to this dynamic more than most because her devotees just love to obsereve her under the microscope doing the ordinary; from her road trip with Gail (possibly the most boring activity earth has to offer) to their camping trip to Yosemite. The point of the above examples is that I believe all we require is a good warm-up serving as a bridge and with that, the remainder of the relationship construction will just fall into place naturally.

Just Say 'in

Reminder, it's not exclusively the jokes, style, business cards or magnetic personality per se as these are merely tools. It's really about giving your prospect something to talk about and establishing a social comfort level in the quickest way possible. Sales do not have to be a mind-bending experience on your part, so relax, try these techniques and expect super results!
