Silicone Breast Implants - General And Basic Cosmetic Surgery Info

By:

Not very long ago, tons of horror stories about silicone breast implants were found on the news. The stories told of women whose implants had leaked or burst, causing silicone to leak into their bodies and making the women very ill. This has caused many women to mistrust silicone breast implants and to believe that they would be bad for them. But in reality, the new silicone implants put in by plastic surgeons during a breast augmentation are a great option for those who are looking for a breast augmentation.

When the first silicone implants were created, they were made with two sections that were glued together. This is what kept the silicone inside of the implant and outside of the bloodstream. This gluing method, however, lead to tears and leaks and were ultimately not a good idea. So in the 1970s, manufacturers created shells that were thinner so they could try to fix the scar issue that the previous implants had caused. Unfortunately, these implants broke after only 10 years of being inside of a woman, causing the silicone leak and once again causing serious health issues to the women who had undergone the surgery.

Now, however, silicone breast implants are made of a silicone-gel filler which is known as MemoryGel. This is much thicker and is put inside of a shell that has much less of a possibility of breakage. Because the silicone implants are much thicker and feel much more like real breasts, many plastic surgeons prefer it to saline implants.

When you decide to have a breast augmentation, you will be faced with trying to choose between silicone implants and saline implants. Both types of implants have their pros and cons, but if youre looking to have a much more realistic feel to your breasts, silicone implants are the way to go. Worries about tears and leaks are no longer a factor as they are now made to be much safer than ever before. If, however, youre worried about leakage, you can still go with saline implants, which may not look as realistic as the silicone implants but which are safe to have implanted in you. Before deciding on the surgery, talk it over with an experienced plastic surgeon who can tell you more about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of implant.
