Sightseeing - Denver Style

Denver Colorado, a one time well known cow town, has grown up over the 80's and has grown to become the metropolitan city between the Mississippi and Las Vegas. It is home to several professional league sports teams; basketball, baseball, football, hockey and soccer. It has a huge convention center that host national and international conventions and a large multiplex performing arts center that hosts many of the traveling Broadway plays, such as Wicked which has performed over several tours.

So what is a visitor to Denver going to do to get the most out of the city? There is culture and nightlife and a host of other activities that one can partake in no matter what season it is.

The most obvious activity in the wintertime is skiing. A visitor can take quickly take the I-70 West into the mountains and be at some of the major ski resorts in Colorado within 60 minutes. While the ski resorts are outside of Denver, most of the ski destinations on the Front Range area start from Denver. Some of the closest resorts are Loveland and Keystone. Eldora is a hop, skip and a jump from Boulder, a city close to Denver.

There are also some specialized museums and homes of famous people that are located in Denver. The famous Brown Palace Hotel, a place made famous by the celebrity guests over the years from the Unsinkable Molly Brown to the Beatles and President Clinton. If you can get a reservation, it is an experience to have High Tea in their main dining room.

One of the many famous annual events that takes place every January is the National Western Stock show which was first held in 1906. You can catch this multi-day event at the National Western Complex. It is the world's largest stock show and is used to preserve the western lifestyle by providing a showcase for the agricultural industry.

If you are in Denver over the 4th of July weekend, you can experience the annual Cherry Creek art festival. This is an outdoor art festival that celebrates the visual, culinary and performance arts. Artists come from all over the world to showcase their talents. You can find a lot of western art along in many unique artistic modalities. Patrons get a free opportunity to meet many of these artists and enjoy live musical performances, or watch cooking shows. Many of the local shops and boutiques in the area are also open for people to patronize.

If you are looking for a quiet evening out, you can catch a Denver movie in the unique Mayan theater. It is Denver's finest independent and foreign language cinemas and one of the country's 3 remaining theaters designed in the Art Deco Mayan Revival style.

There are many places in Denver to experience and many events that give the visitor a unique flavor of the area. Denver has gone from boom to bust to boom and in all that time it has grown to adapt with the times yet still maintain a hold on its unique roots.
