Shoveling Snow

Shoveling Snow

Snow shoveling is a tiresome job. If you plan to clear your driveway off with snow, you best be prepared to take on quite a challenge. Average snowfall can drop inches of snow overnight, and when you wake up, you'll see a lot of packed snow that is much harder to shovel off than when they were fresh.

Do your bodily preparations first. Dress warmly, and comfortably. Don't overdress so as to cause anything to fall on you to instantly melt. Snow shoveling will generate heat from your body. If you dress too much, you'll end up overheating yourself. That said, stretch your body first. Do a lot of stretching for any muscle that may be involved with the activity. Your waist, your arms, your legs, your lower back, stretch until they're flexible enough and so that you don't end up with cramps.

Using your energy in such an indiscriminate manner will make you tire more easily and cause you to shovel with too much force and little work done. Try to plan everything you do first. Check first and make a plan where you will want to move the snow and where you want to clear. You as the owner of the house should know your driveway better than anyone. Check with the neighborhood schedule to when the snow plow service as well so you don't have to redo the whole thing again.

When you start feeling fatigued, rest up a little and drink fluids. Don't overexert and don't think you can do it in one passing if you tire easily. Keeping a proper posture while shoveling snow safeguards your back from stress. Also, don't overdo it. If there's a little bit of snow, let the sun or some de-icer do the rest of the job. If you're skimping, throw in some dark sand. The sun will do the melting for you.

Once you finish your job, do some maintenance on your equipment. The snow will pile up again tomorrow, but your equipment may not be up to the task if you don't maintain it. Hammer your metal shovels if they get bent out of shape. Scrape off anything that's hanging off the end of your shovel. And if you feel that the handle is lose, fix it. A loose handle drains you more energy, far more than how you may realize.
