Should You Choose For A Face Shield Or Riding Glasses?

I was only 18 numerous years of age when I got my first motorbike. It was a 1977 Honda 550 Four with custom dual chrome exhaust and a beefed-up engine. I wasn't the only rider in our family; my brother had just bought a brand new Yamaha. Right off the bat I was conflicted as to if to use a full face shield or an open helmet with riding classes. My brother was wearing a helmet that had a full face shield but my bike had come with a helmet that only had a half shield.

I was left with the choice of purchasing a new helmet that had a full face shield or acquire one without any shield and wear a pair of riding glasses; for the latter I might have to take my chances with any bugs I encountered. This is one thing that I haggled back and forth with. The helmet I had with the half shield was not something I was happy with because they were typically for older people. Yet back then I didn't have the money to lay out for a new helmet which, in those days, was still a couple hundred us dollars for quality model. But then my brother did something that made the choice easy.

He had bought a full front fairing when he was riding from Fort Hood, Texas to New York where we live. But once he was home for couple of months he decided he no longer wanted it. So he decided to give it to me. Even though it could not be considered very manly, I really did love it!

Not only did I stay warmer when the temperature began to decrease, but it solved my predicament. The upper portion of the fairing was just high enough to keep the bugs from hitting me in the face, yet not so high that it interfered with the "wind blowing through your hair" sensation. All I had to do then was purchase a set of riding glasses to go with the helmet I already had after I removed the half shield. And I can say that I still have the riding glasses 28 years later!
