According to the Social Issues Research Centre, the term "white van man" was originally used in 1997 by Radio 2's Sarah Kennedy. However, the perception of the term and the 'prejudices' about van drivers is disappearing as recent research has shown that van drivers are amongst the safest motorists on the UK roads.

The results of further studies and surveys carried out by leading insurance companies also show that van drivers are far less likely to make an insurance claim and therefore insurers are perceiving them to be less of a risk. When the risk levels fall so do the insurance premiums, which is great news for van drivers up and down the country.

Irrespective of public perceptions, van drivers are able to find some very lucrative insurance deals more especially if they shop online and have a good past driving history. Which means that anyone who has not made a claim within the last three to five years (depending on which insurance company you use) will be rewarded with generous no claims discounts. The percentage offered also depends on which insurers you use, however, as like many other businesses the competition is fierce within the insurance industry which means that they will all try and beat each other to gain your custom by offering the lowest premiums and awarding the biggest discounts.

Sounds wonderful and yet in reality you need to be very careful that when you are offered what appears to be a very lucrative insurance deal you are actually getting value for money and that you are being provided with sufficient insurance to meet your driving needs.

This does not mean to say that you won't be offered or be able to find cheap van insurance because you will and you can. It is merely a matter of using the competitive market to your advantage by shopping around and not taking the first deal you are offered.

Perhaps more importantly is that you read the small print or ask what exactly it is you will be getting for your money. Many cheap van insurance deals are the 'stinger' which is a marketing tactic which is skilfully used to grab your attention, delve a little deeper into what is being offered and you may well find that in order to meet your requirements the premiums will begin to start creeping up.

Spend some time researching into what is being offered and above all make it very clear to the insurance companies that you are looking for the best deals as this may well see pounds knocked off the premiums as most of the insurance companies will offer to match or beat any like for like offer you may be offered by their competitors.
