Picking a superior amplifier for your loudspeakers is not a trivial job. You want to make certain that your amplifier matches your loudspeakers. I will explain some basic amplifier vocabulary and give some recommendations to aid you choose the perfect amplifier.

It is difficult to select the best audio amplifier as a consequence of the large quantity of types. All of these models have different specs. Tube amplifiers will have audio distortion of up to 10%. Solid state amplifiers will have less audio distortion depending on the amplifier technology that is employed. In the past, for the most part "Class-A" and "Class-AB" amplifiers were obtainable which are also referred to as "analog amplifiers". While amps employing these technologies typically have low audio distortion, power efficiency is merely 10% to 30%. This means that most of the electrical power supplied to the amp is wasted as heat while a tiny fraction is used to amplify the audio signal.

"Class-D" amplifiers, though, which are also named "digital amplifiers" have a power efficiency of no less than 80% and are smaller and have a smaller power supply than similar analog amplifiers. The disadvantage is that digital amps often have larger audio distortion than analog amps. This is mostly a consequence of the switching distortion of the output power stage. Most recent digital audio amplifiers, on the other hand, utilize a feedback mechanism and can minimize the audio distortion to below 0.05%.

When choosing an amp, ensure that the output power is enough to drive your speakers. The required power will be determined by how much power your speakers can tolerate as well as the size of your space where you will be listening. There are two values for speaker power handling: peak and average power handling. The peak value indicates how much power the speaker can tolerate for small periods of time. The average value on the other hand describes how much power the speaker can tolerate constantly without damage.

In a small listening environment, you might not need to drive your loudspeakers to their rated value. 20 to 40 Watts of power will almost certainly be enough. Notice though that loudspeakers vary in their sensitivity. Usually a low-impedance speaker will be simpler to drive to high volume than a high-impedance speaker. Check your amplifier manual to make sure that your amplifier can drive your loudspeaker impedance.

Two other essential parameters to look at when selecting an amplifier are signal-to-noise ratio and frequency response. Signal-to-noise ratio describes how much noise the amplifier will introduce and should be at least 100 dB for a high-quality amplifier. The frequency response shows which audio frequency range the amplifier covers and should be at least 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
