Shop Smarter & Waste Less

By:

Whether or not you like to think about it, the fact of the matter is you have to spend money on food everyday. It doesnt make a difference if you go grocery shopping once a week or if you go out to restaurants each day, you still have to cough up the dollar bills if you plan on eating everyday.

One of the biggest problems people run into these days, is waste. If youre going to the grocery store once a week and looking to shop for things on a tight budget, wouldnt it make the most sense to stretch the foods youve strategically purchased and not waste any of it?

When you buy too much food, it typically leads to cooking too much food, and when you cook too much food, you usually end up with too many left overs, and finally, when you end up with too many left overs, you throw out perfectly good food because you have to prepare the other groceries that youve bought otherwise those go bad too. This is the type of cycle that leaves many people feeling as though its better to just buy take-out or frozen dinners instead of fresh ingredients that need to be cooked everyday- this however, is not the case.

If this kind of scenario sounds familiar and you think you could cut back on your waste and unused groceries, then its probably not a bad time to sit down with a good old fashion pen and paper. The first thing you have to consider, is the size and eating habits of your family. Once youve come up with a formula that allows you to break foods down into servings for you family, youll be able to go to the grocery store and shop according to this formula.

Once youre at the grocery store youre going to use the formula you came up with to gauge the amount of food youre going to need for one days worth of food. After you have everything all rationed out for one day, youll go back and do the same thing until you have a full weeks worth of food. Once you get the hang of this process youll quickly become a much more efficient shopper!
