Shop Display

Shop Display

By:

Imagine, for a moment, going into a shop where there is no shop display to speak of. What is meant by shop display? Product organisation, sensible arrangement of lines and items so the customer is attracted to them, and sees them in their best light. Without shop display, a premise is little more than a jumble sale a huge bargain bucket with items thrown together in such a fashion that nothing stands out and no-one can find anything.
The human brain requires order. Its pre-programmed to pigeonhole things into classes: by shape, by colour, by type. Its how people make sense of their surroundings and, by extension, its how they shop. Customers are natural classifiers, so they need to be introduced to a well-classified environment. Shop display, when well planned and executed, allows customers to navigate all products in store in a logical fashion (so, for example, books are arranged first by genre and then, within genre, by author). Excellent shop display doesnt just let them navigate it points out things a store owner particularly wishes to sell, and it draws out the most persuasive selling points of those things.
In order to achieve good shop display, a store or company needs to find the best settings to show off the things they sell. Diamond necklaces dont look so hot on shelving units, which is why they are displayed in glass cases in the case of diamond jewellery, good shop display makes them look exclusive (the glass feels protective) and allows a prospective buyer to walk all around them. Exclusivity and security are two of the most important values for a jeweller to convey: its in the choice of shop display that those values are put across.
Books, on the other hand, look better en masse. Good shop display for books is simple shelving. Easy to reach, easy to browse, arranged in sensible order. Shop display like this allows particular items to be drawn to a customers attention, particularly by removing them from the shelves. Put a title face-out on an A-frame stand and a prospective buyer is drawn straight to it a changeable form of shop display (select titles can be rotated at will) that focuses buying attention on a definite article from the hundreds on offer. Book stores that dont channel their customers attention in some way with selective shop display risk overwhelming them. The human mind likes order it also likes to have something small and concrete it can comprehend as an example of the whole.
Appropriate shop display is obviously driven by the nature of ones wares and the expectation of ones customers. Without good shop display its very hard to control customer response in the browsing and selecting process. Effectively, shop display at its best is like a non-human salesperson subtly directing a customers attention and desire without being importunate. Just as good salespeople increase sales, good shop display drives potential footfall into genuine profit.
