Shipping Cars The Easy And Safe Way

Shipping Cars The Easy And Safe Way

By:

When moving abroad or taking an extended holiday, it may be either necessary or convenient to have your car shipped on as well. Shipping cars can be a complicated process involving customs, insurance and transportation methods you are not likely to be familiar with. Hiring a professional company is the fastest and safest way to do this, allowing your vehicle to make it on time and in excellent condition.

There are two main ways to ship cars overseas. The vehicle can go either by container (packed in one for sole use or in a shared container with other items such as furniture, household items and baggage) or on a Roll-On-Roll-Off (or RORO) car ferry. These ocean going vessels have enclosed decks built especially for vehicles and only serve certain ports.

Container Shipping

An economical choice for shipping cars, containers can be shipped into almost any large port. Professional firms will be sure your vehicle is properly packed inside, with wheel chocks to keep it stationary and straps for further stability. A timber frame may also be used for added stability and protection, an especially important feature in a shared container.

Another convenient feature of container shipping is that other items can go along with your vehicle. Arrange to have your furniture shipped as well, along with baggage and any other larger items. Be aware of the time this process takes and do not include anything you will immediately need upon arrival. But many other things can be affordably and easily shipped via shared containers, making the whole process of moving or travelling abroad much easier.

RORO Car Ferries

Similar to the process involved in shipping newly manufactured vehicles overseas, ocean-going RORO vehicle ferries can be used to transport your car from one nation to the other. This is generally a slower process since it is only available once or twice per month. It also runs between certain ports and will likely need to be combined with other methods of shipping between locations on land. In certain circumstances using a car ferry is more economical than container shipments.

There are pathways using RORO car ferries from the UK to Australia and New Zealand, as well as over to North and South America. Wheel chocks and straps are also used and the vehicles are stored below decks to protect them from the elements as they cross the ocean.

Always be sure you are using a bonded firm when shipping cars. Your vehicle is too valuable to risk and hiring a bonded, experienced firm is the wisest option.
