Established in 1998 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) is a non-profit organization focusing on increasing understanding and awareness between the various cultures present in Dubai.
Based in Bur Dubais traditional Bastakia quarter, SMCCU operates under the motto Open Doors, Open Minds. The organization strives to discard barriers between people belonging to different nationalities as well as distribute knowledge on the local customs, culture and religion of UAE.
Whilst their overall objective is to contribute to the improvement of cross-cultural integration and understanding as well as communication between foreigners and locals, the organization provides various activities that are helpful in learning more about Dubais culture.
However, over the years Jumeirah Mosque has become popular as the focal point of the organization. The only mosque in Dubai open to the general public including non-Muslim guests, the mosque is the ideal place to learn about Emirati religion and culture amidst a soothing, casual atmosphere.
Visits of the mosque are hosted by SMCCU every day of the week except for Monday, Wednesday and Friday. No reservations are needed to attend the visit. Private visits can be arranged for those who are unable to join the public visits.
Cultural awareness programmes are held by the organization for companies in the public and private sector across UAE. These programmes are tailor-made to meet the demands of certain institutions.
