Sheffield is a city in yorkshire, the uk. it was called sheffield as the city began in a field on the River Sheaf. sheffield's population was estimated at 525 800 people in 2006, & sheffield is one of the 8 biggest british cities outside London.

It's historically an industrial city, which is renowned for making steel. The city's steel manufacturing history was shown in the 1997 film, The Full Monty.

Sheffield won international fame during the nineteeth century for its manufacture of steel. in fact, most innovations in the steel industry were developed in sheffield, including crucible (also the name of a theatre in the city) & stainless steel. however, international competition caused a decline in these traditional local industries during the seventies & eighties. at the same time, the coal industry collapsed nearby, which caused massive unemployment & affected Sheffield's population.

Recently, Sheffield's economy has recovered &, because of its thriving music & film scene, it has become renowned as a cultural centre.

You will find loads of wonderful things to do in Sheffield. In fact, the city boasts some wonderful museums & art galleries, which are well worth visiting. These include the fabulous graves gallery, which has some wonderful work by artists including Cezanne, Turner & Sam taylor wood. It also hosts frequent touring exhibitions.

A handful of other wonderful museums & galleries are the Millennium Galleries and Bishops House.

Sheffield has many to offer shopping fans. the city has meadowhall, which is a massive shopping centre with over 240 stores. The shopping centre opened its doors in 1990 & was one of the very first out of town malls in the uk.

Despite this, Sheffield city centre has some great shops, too. in actual fact, you will find everything there, from high street stores like makeover, to unusual independent stores.

Sheffield is well known for its wonderful night life, so its visitors are never disappointed. whether you prefer drinking cocktails in one of the city's exclusive cocktail bars or a swift pint of beer in one of its rustic pubs, you will find something for everyone to enjoy in this city.

In addition to these watering holes, Sheffield also has a handful of exciting nightclubs & live music venues. These include the leadmill & the Red House.

Sheffield has a wide variety of different hotels that is suitable for any budget. From branches of huge hotel chains including the Hilton, Ibis and Novotel to small guesthouses and bed & breakfasts, there is a wide variety of accommodation available.
