Sheep Drenches To Drench All The Ills

By:

Sheep drenches are useful instruments to give large doses of medication to sheep (can also be used for other animals in some cases) which are infected by parasitic worms such as liver flukes and roundworms which cause stomach and other ailments.
Farm animals are prone to many ailments due to different worms present in the environment, especially due to the pastures that they graze on. Drenches are necessary for sheep because the medication needed to be administered to them is usually in large quantity and it is physically impossible to administer the medicines, which are mostly liquid medicines through any other way (sheep are almost always given liquid medicine). However, it is not just drenches that make effective administration complete (although, yes, they do make a large part of it), but using the right kind of drench is equally important.

For warm and wet conditions, one should use multi active and long acting drenches as infections run amok during these conditions and one needs to give many medicines over frequent intervals to the sheep. In dry conditions, single active sheep drenches can do the work effectively as in dry season the cattle is less prone to infection than the wet season. The drenches should be used according to the given instructions in the manual as they are delicate instruments and can accrue damage if not used properly. They can also harm the sheep if used carelessly.

The other important factors that the effectiveness of the drench depends on are the accuracy with which the weather and paddock conditions are taken into account. Also, before using the drench one should always conduct the worm test in the sheep and use it to monitor the sheep by using the worm-egg count in its faeces. The accurate dosage to be administered can be determined by the weight of the sheep. Keeping the drench on the sheep's tongue further increases its efficiency.

The two medicines that are used to cure diseases in sheep are Combinex and Flukiver. Combinex can cure diseases such as parasitic bronchitis, fascioliasis and gastroenteritis, which in simple words are infections of the lungs and stomach, occurring commonly in sheep and other cattle. This can cure both early and mature stages of diseases occurring through liver fluke parasite which attaches itself on the intestines and moves to the bile and causes anemia and weight loss in sheep. This medicine can be given through all kinds of sheep drench, though the multi active drench works better.

Flukiver is also an effective medicine against fascioliasis or the diseases occurring due to liver flukes. It is also effective in conditions such as anemia, discomfort and jaundice in sheep. This can be administered to even pregnant sheep but not to lactating ones. This can also not be given to sheep producing milk for human consumption. If meat of such a sheep has to be consumed, it can only be done after 42 days have passed since the last treatment. Before administering any oral drench, it is important to estimate the extent of the infection in order to give the right dosage.
