Shed Foundation - Getting This Step Right Is Crucial For Your Shed

By:

If you want to save money and at the same time feel the satisfaction of finishing a big home project, you should build your own shed. The process of building a shed has always been from the floor to the roof, so the shed foundation is always the first aspect that should be considered.

Many plans are available either in bookstores or online to guide you through your shed building process.

Materials for Your Shed Foundation
To save you time and trouble, you can purchase a foundation kit to start laying out the groundwork. A shed foundation kit is a complete set of materials used to construct a shed base. There are plenty of kits that are available on the market, and it will be wise to shop around first until you find one that fits what you need. You can also ask experienced shed builders for recommendations for the best available kits.

Where to Place the Shed in Your Yard?
Check your local zoning laws for requirements and restrictions when it comes to placing a shed in your yard area. Also, it is important to keep in mind the following considerations when deciding where to build your shed:

1. Connection to utility lines

2. Direction of sunlight

3. Distance of the shed from your property line

Building Your Base
When you have already zeroed in on the location of your shed, it is time to stake out the area. You can create a shed foundation by making a concrete slab or digging the ground and then filling it with gravel.

If you decide to dig into the ground, make sure that you dig at a depth of at least six inches. Use a tamper (a pole with a flat base) to compress the ground. You can either use a hand tamper or rent a mechanical tamper in a hardware store. Then, you should blanket the base of the hole with a landscape fabric, making it a point to overlap the sides of the hole and seams by a few inches.

Install beams on along each edge, and hammer nails through the beams' sides to make it steady. Using a mallet, drive the stakes into the ground until the stakes are at level with the top edge of the form. After building the form, you then spread a layer of crushed gravel into the form, and compress the gravel using a tamper. This time, the required depth is five inches before the top edge of the form. Finally, pour concrete into the hole until it reaches half the height of the hole.

The foundation of your shed is always the starting point of the entire process and building one correctly will result in a structure that will last for a long time. With a strong and stable foundation in place, the rest of the elements can easily be constructed.
