Sharing Life Secrets With a First Grandchild

By: Mary Nerburn

A first grandchild! The family legacy is called forth to continue. The notion that my family now continues to the next generation fills me with awe. How blessed I am! Our family welcomes the newest member of BraveHeart Kidz.

What do I feel compelled to share with this tiny person of extraordinary potential â€" this beautiful creation of two loving parents? Here are some powerful insights that I have learned in my life that I offer in deep love and gratitude to my new grandchild.

Love and respect yourself. You are an esteemed person of value. No one in the entire world ever had or will have the one-of-a-kind combination of your height, your kind eyes, and your tremendous talents and gifts. So celebrate your uniqueness. Know that others love you simply for being you.

And who loves you more than God? Learn to love God and to pray. Find quiet time in your life to talk to God and develop a relationship. Talk to God when you’re on your swing in the backyard or when you’re riding your bike. See God in your family, your friends, and everyone you meet.

Develop a solid character. Your character is imprinted on your soul just as a character is imprinted on a page of a book. It is who you are when no one is looking. Will you return the dollar bill that your classmate just dropped or will you keep it for yourself? No one will know but you. The values you choose to guide you through you life will be closely linked to the character you’ve created.

Learn to sing. Confidently claim your own special voice and own it â€" no matter what it â€oesounds” like - and find the joy and healing that comes with the healthy vibrations created in your body by singing. Start singing at a young age â€" the gift will stay with you all your life and bring you great pleasure, sometimes at the darkest moments of your life.

Find self-expression in movement. A body in motion is a body in joy. Whether it’s shooting hoops, running with the dog, or twirling around in circles, movement creates personal freedom. Let the world know you through your â€oedance.” And don’t forget to bend over in a big belly laugh! Laughter makes you feel oh so good.

Celebrate and anticipate the joy of family traditions. Make birthdays special â€" take your friends for a party at the zoo! Jump in the leaves every autumn with your family! Use your creative genius to create new sacred traditions and seal them into your family story.

Create a circle of friends. We require the support of people who love us for who we are despite our shortcomings. Nurture those friendships. They are like flowers that require good soil, water, and sunlight to grow. So, too, with your garden of friends. Give them your time, your attention, and your love.

Create a vision for your life. Dream big and set lofty goals. Fall in love with your passion, run with it, and even develop your career around it. Find a mentor, listen well, learn all you can, and then take action, running hard and fast toward your dreams.

Be open to new experiences along the way. Ask questions and read, read, read! Remember that everyone you meet is another book on the shelf of life, brimming with insights into the mysteries of life. Humbly internalize all this wisdom and know that knowledge is power.

Yes, your life is an open book. Your story began the day you were born. With good, loving family and friends at your side, you are writing a wonderful story of your abundant life that will be shared with future generations.
