Sewing The New Fad?

Fashion Sewing is making a come back. 10 years ago the hobby/craft/passion of fashion sewing was waning. So why is it making a comeback? Is it money, the financial crisis or just a new fad?

Well the answer to this question could be easily attributed to all these things. With the financial crisis many people have been looking at their wardrobe considering how they can spruce it up for very little cost. The discovery of how simple changes to a garment can make it look new and different has given birth to a new hobby. Not only does this create as sense of self satisfaction but also saves money.

Sewing machines no doubt have helped contribute to the new sewing phenomenon. Sewing machines are more than just a way of stitching up your new garments. They offer methods of embellishing your new and existing clothes. The new machines are in manufactured in a great range of prices so it makes it more affordable than ever before for people to make the investment in a sewing machine.

Of course the sewing boom has ensured that the second hand sewing machine market has become a lucrative one. More experienced sewers are upgrading their machines with the comfort of knowing their old machine will be easily sold.

Another reason that fashion sewing could be making a comeback is the way fashion trends have not changed very much over the years. Masses of the same clothes sit on the clothing shop racks giving us no identity at all. By making our own clothes we can use simple patterns using a huge range of fabrics to create our own identity and not look like the next person we pass in the street.

Sewing allows us to recycle. Many savvy and seasoned sewers are able to reconstruct an existing garment and recycle it to a new and unique garment. These types of garments are often in demand and many sewers have found themselves in the midst of a new cottage industry.

New sewers are joining community sewing groups and classes to learn from the ground up. Not only do they learn a new skill but they also find they make new friends as these are great social outlets for like minded people. And don't think this is for just women. Many young men are attending these classes and groups as well! Remember many of the worlds fashion designers are men.

So whether you are new to sewing or a seasoned sewer looking to start sewing after a few years break you will find that this is now a growth hobby. New shops are opening and expanding to accommodate the new buyers for fabric, machines and sewing supplies. Sewing is one of the simplest of hobbies and certainly a rewarding one.
