Sewage cleanup is a process that needs to be taken very seriously and dealt with very thoroughly and meticulously to avoid some potentially serious and life threatening illnesses from spreading to the people living in the facility and the people who deal with those people on a regular basis. Sewage can be very dangerous if not taken care of properly, and therefore special care needs to be taken when handling this toxic human waste.

The first step to sewage cleanup is finding the source of the backup. You may have a blocked pipe that is causing the sewage to spill over or if you are on a septic system you may need to have your septic tank pumped on a more regular basis.

Once you find the source of your problem, you should act to fix the problem as quickly as possible to prevent more sewage from backing up and getting into your home where it does not belong. Bleach, rubber gloves, and face masks are going to be key ingredients to cleaning up the nasty sewage that is inside your home. If the sewage has come up in your bathtub, you should make sure you use products that will be able to unblock the drains and clear out any debris from the sewage that is left behind in the pipes. Once you do this, you can get the mass of the sewage out of the bathtub and use a strong bleach mixture to thoroughly disinfect the entire contaminated area. Make sure that if you are using any other cleaning products in your bathtub that you check to make sure you there are no harmful chemical reactions between those products and bleach.

Once you have worked to disinfect the contaminated area as much as possible, you need to make sure that the entire house or building is ventilated as much as possible. You want to dry out the affected area as much as possible to minimize the bacteria growth on the affected areas. If carpet has come in contact with the sewage, it is probably in your best interest to just get rid of it all together, however, if you do decide to keep your carpeting, replace the padding underneath and do your best to dry and disinfect both the top and underside of the carpet as well as the floor underneath.

Once you have done all that you can to clean up the sewage that has contaminated your home or building, you should get a bacteria test kit to make sure that there are no hazardous pathogens or bacteria that will cause illness to you or anyone around you. Safety is the number one priority when it comes to cleaning up sewage and every effort should be made to ensure the health of your family and others that will be in contact with the affected areas.
